If you are unfamiliar with IHOP, it’s a 24/7 restaurant where people can have breakfast for dinner. While it is well known for having an affordable selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, customers can have a similar but new experience at the Amphora Diner Deluxe and Amphora Restaurant.
With locations in Vienna and Herndon, Amphora is a family-run group founded by the Cholakis and Bilidas families, who opened the Amphora Restaurant in Vienna in the late 1960s. Throughout the years, the company has grown and opened up another location in Herndon called the Amphora Diner Deluxe. Both locations offer catering options and have their own bakeries with varied selections

I’ve been coming here for about 18 years – since I was about 10 – and even though not much has changed, there’s a reason: it works. The decor still doesn’t feel that dated even after almost 2 decades. Not every single meal is a stand-out, but the menu is extensive and has a lot of options for a lot of different diets. They do breakfast the best, with French Toast that literally melts in your mouth and a fried egg club that is really satisfying. The crab cakes and grilled cheeses (there are many options) are also quite good.
The fact that I’ve lived 3 miles away and have never been here for the past year is embarrassing! I think it’s possible because I didn’t like the one in Vienna so I felt it was the same but quite frankly I am wrong! Also, you can’t beat that its opened 24 hours.
The first time I came, I had the corned beef hash meal and It has become my favorite corned beef dish anywhere! They use REAL meat, not the one from the store that looks similar in most places. It’s tender, chunky pieces of meat with small bits of potatoes. Oh man!! I could really eat it every day. Then I came back about two weeks later and decided to try buffalo wings and cobb salad. The buffalo sauce is like a mix of bbq and buffalo to me, a little tangy and has a kick to it. I could put that ish on everything! Cobb salad comes with heaping portions of bacon, cheddar cheese, tomatoes, corn, chicken and boiled eggs. I could barely get through the half but it was very delicious.
This is the second year in a row I’m in the area for an event, so I decided to try the diner closest to the hotel. This diner seems to be rather popular at breakfast time. The interior is done in the classic diner style, comfortable with many booths. I thought Amphora’s food pricing was on the high side for diners (although probably not too out of line for the DC area) but portions are big and the Tex Mex Scramble I tried was pretty good. Service was very sweet and attentive. .
